Old A40 To Reopen Following Safety Repair Work

Via press release from Gloucestershire County Council

Work to safely repair and reopen the road linking the A40 with the A429 near Northleach will take place next month, Gloucestershire County Council announced today.

The road at this site near Northleach – known as ‘Prison Copse’ Wall or the “Old A40” – has been closed for two years after the wall collapsed in spring 2017 and cracking appeared on the carriageway. Highways engineers have been working to establish the exact cause of the damage and design the best repair solution. Fixing these types of road faults can be complicated and take considerable time to fix.

From 4 March to 27 March Highways crews will carry out road repairs including reconstructing the carriageway, drainage work, fencing, lining and new signage. Once the repairs have been completed, the county council will continue to monitor the condition of the road and surrounding area to make sure the road remains safe. An extension of the 30mph speed limit will be imposed and a short length of carriageway will be limited to a single lane with passing bays.

Cllr Vernon Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways and Flood, said: “The Prison Copse road linking the A40 and A429 near Northleach had to be closed. Safety has to be our number one priority, so a full road closure had to remain in place to protect the public. I understand that the road closure has caused inconvenience to local residents, therefore I’m pleased these safety improvements are taking place and I would like to thank local residents and road users for their ongoing patience.”

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, local county councillor for Bourton-on-the-Water and Northleach, said: “I’ve campaigned hard on behalf of residents to get this road re-opened. I know how important the route is for local residents and visitors alike, therefore I’m delighted our highways crews are now able to carry out the essential repairs to allow this popular route to link villages and Northleach together again.”

Old A40 Collapse, Ground Investigation Report

The Town Council has received the following update from Highways about the collapse at Prison Copse:

“A copy of the factual report summarising the results of the Ground Investigation undertaken earlier this year is attached. This report sets out the detail of the borehole logs obtained from site and the results of the samples tested in the laboratory.

The next stage is to relate the borehole results to the surrounding geology and local geological maps. This results in a ‘Geotechnical Interpretive Report’ (GIR), which is being compiled at present and will aid us in specifying and procuring the treatment required at the site. As part of this we will confirm which budget the works should be sourced from and in what year works will take place.

The Geotechnical team are currently focused on making sure the Geotechnical Remediation Scheme at Horsley is delivered. Once the team have the Horsley work underway they will turn their attention to the A40 slip report and we will send you a copy of it when it is completed.”

Re-open the Old A40

Road-closed-sign-oldA40-220wThe old A40 runs between the A40 at Puesdown and the Old Prison at Northleach and has been well used by local people as an alternative route to Northleach and to villages such as Yanworth and Compton Abdale. It was closed in 2015 as a result of a wall collapsing and the ground subsiding.

Whilst we all understand that it takes time to investigate and remedy a situation, Paul Hodgkinson believes that enough is enough and that County Council highways bosses must now act and provide a timetable for the road to be re-opened.

Support Paul’s campaign to re-open the road. Add your name and details to the petition below and help us to help out pressure on Gloucestershire County Council and Highways to re-open the old A40 as quickly as possible.
