Chedworth Roman Villa

Visit the ruins of one of the largest Romano-British villas in the country. Set in a wooded Cotswold valley, the site was originally excavated in 1864. Over a mile of walls survives and there are several fine mosaics, two bathhouses, hypocausts, a water shrine and latrine. Get close to the mosaics, some of which were excavated in 2013, on state-of-the-art walkways.

Escape to the Cotswolds

Accessed through the Old Prison (hence “Escape”…) the visitor centre houses an interpretive display of the story of the Cotswolds, where you can find out more about this beautiful landscape and how people have helped shape it over thousands of years. The building is also home to the Cotswold Conservation Board, the Lloyd Baker Rural Life Collection of agricultural implements, and the Cotswold Lion Cafe.

The visitor centre is open Tuesdays to Sundays, although it isn’t staffed during the winter period. The cafe is open daily.

Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate

Keith Harding’s World of Mechanical Music

The museum houses a fascinating collection of self-playing instruments in the old school room, plus a selection of musical automata. Regular guided tours include demonstrations of barrel pianos, musical boxes and polyphons and reproducing pianos to name a few. Stowell Park

The Stowell Park Estate is a private estate near Northleach that has been owned by the Vestey family since 1921. It extends over 5,500 acres of grassland, arable and woodland with good inter-connecting public rights of way. Stowell Park Gardens open twice a year as part of the National Gardens Scheme. The beautiful lawned terraces have fine views over the Coln Valley, and two large walled gardens contain fruit, vegetables and a long rose pergola.
