NORTHLEACH HISTORICAL SOCIETY

An Education – The Unexpected Consequences of a Rural Girl’s stay in the Northleach Workhouse

Northleach Workhouse in East End – later a hospital and now the Northleach Court care home – was built in 1836 for the “deserving poor”, with men and women kept in separate blocks.  Isabel Harvey has researched and reconstructed the story of the women and girls who were taught by Jane Hine, a dedicated woman who spent all her working life at Northleach Workhouse.

Isabel, a National Trust collections assistant at Chastelton House, says “I want Northleach to know about this wonderful and rather amazing woman – the town should be very proud of her”.

Members free, visitors £3.
