Changes to Bin Collections Christmas 2024

There are changes to bin collections over the holiday period.

Northleach’s usual “everything” collection day for recycling and general waste is a Thursday. Therefore, the last collection before Christmas will be on Thursday 19th December.

A food waste only collection is scheduled for Saturday 28th December, two days later than usual as crews catch up after the bank holidays.

The next “everything” collection will take place on Saturday 4th January.

Normal service resumes from Monday 6th January.

Green bins garden waste collections are suspended from Tuesday 24 December and will resume on Tuesday 7 January 2025.

Christmas Tree Collection

If you subscribe to the garden waste service, you can leave your real Christmas tree at the kerbside for collection. Please follow these steps:

  • Cut your tree into manageable sections and place the pieces in your green bin, ensuring the lid can close.
  • For smaller trees (6 feet and under), cut them in half.
  • For trees over 6 feet, cut them into three sections.

To make it easier for all households to dispose of their trees, Cotswold District Council has partnered with three local garden centres to provide convenient drop off points:

  • Dobbies Garden Centre, Cirencester, GL7 6EU
  • Batsford Garden Centre, Batsford, GL56 9QB
  • Hillier Garden Centre, Lechlade, GL7 3DP

Trees need to be dropped off by Friday 20 January and will go on to be composted.

Free Winter Fun For Families This Christmas

Press release from Gloucestershire County Council:

The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme is back. Families eligible for benefits-related free school meals can register now for the winter HAF. Thanks to grant funding, the county council is pleased to extend these fun, enriching holiday activities to all children and young people through the Holiday Activities Programme (HAP).

Most activities will be taking place between 21 December 2024 and 5 January 2025. Families are encouraged to check their local district HAF webpages to see information about what’s happening near where they live.

Booking opens at midday on Monday 2 December, but families can browse activities from midday on Monday 18 November to plan which ones they would like to attend.

This winter there are lots of great options to choose from including drama and science workshops, sports and games, art and crafts, music and dance, indoor and outdoor activities, as well as the very popular ticketed attractions such as ice skating and pantomimes.

More information about the programme is available at: www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/haf.

If they haven’t done so already, families are encouraged to register for the Children’s Activities Booking System (CABS) now to be ready to view and select activities and follow their district lead on social media to stay updated on local events.

Families needing extra support to choose, book, or attend HAF activities can get help from six HAF Community Connectors, one for each district. This winter, there’s also a Specialist SEND Community Connector to improve support for children and young people with additional needs.

Since HAF began, the programme has provided more than 170,000 activity sessions for children and young people across the county, helping to create memorable experiences for thousands of families who have shared how much they greatly value the opportunities it offers.

Cllr Paul McLain cabinet member for children at Gloucestershire County Council said: “Families have told us just how much they value the Holiday Activities and Food programme, so I’m delighted that it’s back again this winter to provide free, fun activities for children and young people. It’s a great way to stay active, learn new things, and make wonderful memories. I’d encourage families who haven’t registered yet to do so now, so they’re ready when booking opens. HAF Community Connectors can provide support if anyone needs help with choosing, booking, or attending activities.”

Charity Examiner Required

Are you a recently retired or part time accountant or book-keeper who would be willing to volunteer a few hours of your time every year to be the Independent Examiner of the annual accounts for our charity, the King George V Playing Field Northleach Trust? Our year end is 31 March 2025 so we would be looking for help around Easter time.

A summary of our accounts will be found at the Charities Commission website. Also linked below is Government guidance on the role of the Independent Examiner. As usual with Government documents it is lengthy, but it gives you an idea of what you would be looking for! It is a small charity with only 50-odd financial transactions per year and meticulous records so it should not be on onerous task.

Please get in touch if you think you might be interested in helping.

Community Hall Cleaner Required

Join our team! We’re looking for a reliable cleaner to keep our community centre in top condition. Duties include cleaning floors, surfaces, and facilities to ensure a welcoming environment for all users. Typically this would take 2 hours per week, with extra hours after a large function. There is some flexibility about hours to be worked.

The contract would best suit a self-employed person who takes pride in their work and has their own insurance. Cleaning materials provided. Hourly rate to be agreed.

To discuss this opportunity or apply please contact Pauline at clerk@northleach.gov.uk or 01451 885349.

Join Northleach Flood Action Group

In September an almost unprecedented amount of rain caused flooding across Northleach and particularly along the High Street. Thanks to amazing response from the community the worst of the impact was alleviated, but several homes were flooded causing thousands of pounds of damage. Within days of the flood Gloucestershire Highways cleared all of the drains and gullies which should enable more water to drain but we all know that leaves and debris will continue to accumulate. Whilst we can’t do anything about the weather, we can take action to give ourselves the best chance of dealing with the rain by keeping gullies and drains clear.

If you have time and would like to help your community then please consider becoming a Drain Guardian. This is a new role for Northleach but is based on voluntary approaches in other areas that carry a flood risk. As a group we will allocate drains to Guardians who will then keep them clear of leaves and debris, report issues to Gloucestershire County Council and be the first line of defence when the flood risk is high.

If you’d like to get involved, please get in touch. We will set up a meeting to run through the role in more detail and allocate drains.
