The role of Town Crier dates back to mediaeval times when many people could not read or write. Town Criers performed a valuable public service passing on important announcements and a loud voice was essential.
These days town criers perform more of a ceremonial function. A competition held on the eve of the Coronation resulted in the appointment of Matt Backhouse to this volunteer position. His first task was to proclaim the coronation of the new king!
