Northleach Historical Society: Tolkien in the Cotswolds

Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire all played a significant role in JRR Tolkien’s personal and literary life – and are the origins of the Shire and Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings.
As Andy Meller explains, Tolkien was born in South Africa but brought up in Birmingham. He served at the Somme in the First World War, and became Professor of Anglo Saxon at Oxford.
The Cotswolds landscape provided much of the inspiration for Middle Earth, and Tolkien discovered a ring with supposed magical powers at Lydney Park in the Forest of Dean. Tolkien’s wife Edith was born in Gloucester, and they married in Warwick. Their first child was born at a nursing home in Cheltenham.
Andy Meller has worked as a head teacher, actor and storyteller, and has always had a passion for history.
Members free, guests £3.
