Northleach Historical Society: Cheltenham’s Lady Builder
Dr Steven Blake, former keeper of Social History at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, describes how thanks to the Honorable Katherine Monson (1754-1843) Cheltenham became home to Regency-style building while the great and good of the Recency era enjoyed the benefits of its mineral waters. After George III spent five weeks in the town in 1788 in a bid to be cured of his ailments, Cheltenham became even more popular as a place to £take the waters”, escape the London smog, and in some cases find marriage partners.
