Northleach Historical Society: William Marshal, England’s Greatest Knight

7 October @ 7:30 pm

William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, was the Regent of England and hailed as “the greatest knight who ever lived.” He served Henry II, Richard I, King John, and finally the young Henry III, who later signed the Northleach Market Charter. Under Henry III Marshal reissued Magna Carta, was a legendary tournament champion, and led a cavalry charge at the age of 70 to defeat French forces against the odds at the Battle of Lincoln in 1217. He died in 1219, and his life is said to have inspired Chaucer’s Knight’s Tale. His story is told us by Dr Robert Jones, an historian specialising in medieval warfare.

Members free, guests £5.
