Northleach Historical Society ¦ Taking the Waters: The Rise and Fall of the English Spa
English spas have a long and steamy history, from the thermal baths of Aquae Sulis in Bath to the elegant pump rooms of Cheltenham. Melanie King, author of The Secret History of the English Spa, tells us about those who who visited spas in the hope of cures – as well as the social life enjoyed in spa towns. English spas also offered a place where classes could mingle and enjoy music and dance – the fashionable pastime known as ‘taking the waters’.
