Vote for a New Name for the Westwoods Development

Cotswold District Council has asked the town council for our feedback on proposed street names for the new development on the former school playing field at Bassett Road. Building is expected to start soon. (Scroll down for the poll).

Other roads on the site of the Westwoods Grammar School are named after former headmasters at the school, William Fallows and Wilbert Bassett. Proposed street names should have historical relevance, and the town council strongly supports the idea of continuing the theme of using headmasters’ names.

Stuart Shaw was headmaster from 1979 to 1988. Charles Lowry and Henry Askew are believed to have been headmasters before Wilbert Bassett. We also suggested Bradley Drive as James Bradley was educated at Northleach Grammar School and later became Astronomer Royal.

The developer had proposed ‘Westwoods Drive’ for the main street in the development, but we felt that this could cause confusion as it would mean the Westwoods Centre was not on Westwoods Drive. They also put forward ‘Heritage Gate’ as the name for the private drive.

The developer may not adopt the name we suggest, but we would like to provide them with alternative choices that have local support. You can pick two choices in the poll.

The poll will run from now until 9am Monday 23 January.

The district council has advised us that “the selection of new street names requires careful consideration to ensure that they are suitable for the area and will not conflict with or duplicate any existing names in the same locality.” We cannot use the names of people who are still living.

  1. There appears to be a consensus of opinion that dear Wilf should have his name immortalised on the Wetswoods site. So I concur Potter (way, avenue, place or road) is a good choice. Thank you.

    1. Totally agree. He had so much passion and what did we give him. He deserved so much more.

  2. Another vote for a road name to remember Wilf Potter please. I started at Westwoods slightly too late to be taught by him but he was legendary and a quirky character at a much loved school.

  3. I really think that the names proposed in the list reflect little of the school’s longer term history – why pick Bradley over the other house names? And why Shaw who had such short tenure and was unpopular. Fallows was a long standing popular head during the school’s golden age, lived in the schoolhouse in Northleach for years so how about Fallow Fields? (Nice double entendre too) Wilf Potter, Latin and choirmaster is fondly remembered by everyone so Potter’s View or some such would be welcomed.

  4. Potter Lane would be much better if you wanted a link to WGS. Most of those other names mean nothing to most of us.

  5. Definitely a vote for Potter included somehow. Such a massive influence on anyone that remembered him.

  6. I agree that the choices offered have very little connection with the lifeblood and history of our great school. Mr Fallows has already been recognised in the initial development and I’m with the many who’d like to see Mr Potter commemorated. I liked “Potters Place” or I would suggest “The Potters”.
It’s a shame there wasn’t a prior consultation with old Westwoodians prior to the options the Council came up with. Suggest they start again!

  7. Another vote for something ‘Wilf Potter’ related. He was at Westwood’s for many years (early 60s to mid 80s) and also cycled into Northleach daily from the Aldsworth area. He died in 2008.

  8. Definitely something commemorating Mr Wilf Potter. He was a lovely kind gentleman and teacher. A*** I would like to see his name in full…. Wilf Potter Road.

  9. Have voted for Bradley but would also support the motion to remember Wilf Potter. A true legend. Potter’s Lane perhaps?

  10. I think Potters Road or Potters Lane would be a suitable choice. It would remember Mr potter, a most popular and respected person from the school.
