In 1928, what was then known as Northleach ‘Parish’ Council purchased land from Lord Sherborne and also received an additional parcel of land as a gift for a Public Recreation area. Ten years later in1939, Mr W J Castle gave another parcel of land for the same purpose and the whole was vested in the King George’s Fields Foundation. Northleach King George V Playing Field was born!
Since then the ground has been drained and the Playing Field surface developed. We now have an adult size football pitch, a cricket square and juniors football pitch, 2 tennis courts, a tennis club hut, a cricket club store, a children’s play area, a car park, an area of free space and a Pavilion.
All this is managed by a board of Trustees who are the Town Councillors. But, as a registered charity, the Trust is managed completely separately from the Council and maintains its own accounts. The only income it receives is from the sports clubs that use the Field and the changing facilities in the Pavilion and, more recently, the lease holder of the Pavilion bar.
The Town Council pays for the upkeep of the children’s play area together with the grass cutting and maintenance of the Field and river as a donation towards an important community facility for the Town.
The Trustees usually meet after Town Council meetings – approximately 10 times per year on the fourth Wednesday in the month at the Westwoods Centre. For more information please see the Market Place noticeboard or click here for agendas and minutes
