What does the money go on?
The main item of expense is grounds maintenance (grass cutting and stone
walling), followed by staff and administrative costs (like most
councils, we employ a Town Clerk half-time to deal with the volume of
planning and other legislation which we have to keep up with).
Councillors, incidentally, are not paid!
Who is on the Council?
At the May 2003 elections only six councillors stood for the eleven
places, so - like over 90% of Cotswold councils - we did not have an
election. However, five more have now come forward and been co-opted on
to bring us up to strength.
What have we as a Council achieved?
Over the last five years the Council, in addition to its routine work,
has:
- secured grants to resurface the Market Place
- rebuilt most of the cemetery wall and started a tree planting
programme
- improved the lighting in the town
- expanded the green spaces of the town by taking over the Hamilton
Meadow (kindly loaned to us by Bobby Wills)
- built and run the Westwoods Centre out of grant money
- rebuilt the allotment wall
- raised funds by selling some of the Westwoods land for the Medcentres
development
- resurfaced the car park that serves the school, the Sports
and Social Club, and users of King George V playing field.
What would we as a Council like from
you?
If you live or work in Northleach or Eastington, we would
like to hear your views about Northleach. And if you are interested in
taking part in the work of maintaining and improving the community we
live in, you can help by joining one of our committees (for example, to
look after the Playing Field, the Hamilton Meadow, the Cemetery, the
Town). Please note that you don't have to be a councilor to sit on a committee: many committee members aren't
councilors.
How would I find out more?
Ring any of the people mentioned
below, or come to one of our
Committee meetings. We meet every month in the Westwoods Centre at
7.30pm - Caroline Braidwood will be able to give you details (01451 861499). Meetings
are completely public and are reported in the Press: in addition agendas
and minutes of meetings are displayed in our notice board in the Market
Place.
Local democracy is like local shops.
If we don't use it - we'll lose it!
